Exploring Product Types in BakeSmart
Standard Products
Included in every BakeSmart package
What they are: Standalone, baked-off products that are sold “as-is,” requiring no other foundational building blocks.
Examples: Bread, Muffins, Danish, Homestyle Cookies (Chocolate Chip).
Options allowed: Simple modifiers such as sliced/unsliced, small/large, or similar.
Why they matter: Standard Products form the backbone of your menu. Categories and subcategories here control how items display in the App, POS, and eCommerce.
Custom Products (part of Cake Matrix add-on)
What they are: Products built from Collections (templates) that allow for full customization.
Examples: Custom Cakes, Custom Cookies, Custom Cupcakes, Cake Pops, Petit Fours.
Options allowed: All selections defined by the Collection: Size, Shape, Layers, Flavor, Filling, Frosting, Decorations.
How they work:
- Create a Custom Collection (e.g., Custom Cake Collection with 8”, 10”, and ¼ sheet sizes).
- Build Custom Items from that collection with every option available.
POS/App Behavior: Custom product orders are always created in the App. POS links staff into the App workflow when needed.
Why they matter: Essential for bakeries that offer fully customizable cakes or specialty products.
Signature Products (part of Cake Matrix add-on)
What they are: Products based on Custom Items, but with limited choices locked down by the bakery.
Examples:
- Birthday Cake – only Chocolate or Vanilla cake, 1–2 frosting options, and limited decorations (e.g., Balloons or Flowers).
- Signature Jumbo Cupcake – a fixed set of flavor/frosting combos.
Options allowed: Some choices remain open, but fewer than Custom Products.
How they’re created:
- Start with a Custom Product as the building block.
- Assign specific flavor/frosting/decorations to create a simplified product.
Why they matter: They speed up ordering, provide consistency, and still allow limited flexibility for customers.
Bundles
Available to all BakeSmart users
What they are: Products of products — groups of items packaged together and sold as one. Bundles can include Standard, Custom, or Signature Products.
Examples:
- Cookie Platter – a tray made up of Standard Cookies (pre-selected by the bakery or chosen by the customer), plus a tray fee.
- Party Pack – 1 cake + 1 dozen cookies + 1 dozen cupcakes.
- Holiday Bundle – 3 pies sold together at a set price.
Options allowed: Depends on the products included. Bakery can lock down the selection or allow customer choice.
Why they matter: Simplifies seasonal promotions, catering, and wholesale orders. Bundles also make it easy to apply group pricing or packaging fees (like trays or boxes).
Best Practices for Product Types
- Use Standard Products for everyday, “as-is” items.
- Use Custom Products when customers need full flexibility.
- Use Signature Products when you want to offer limited choices without full customization.
- Use Bundles to combine multiple products (Standard, Custom, or Signature) into a single, easy-to-order package.
Keep categories and naming conventions consistent across all Product Types for clean reports and staff training.
