How to Set Up Taxes in BakeSmart

Accurate tax setup is critical for smooth bakery operations. In BakeSmart, you can configure taxes by location, allowing you to meet local tax laws and apply specific rates to different types of products or order scenarios. Use this guide to set up tax rates in the system and ensure your reporting and customer receipts are accurate.

Overview of Tax Configuration

The Taxes tab in the Location Details Menu is where you define which tax rates apply to orders from each store. This ensures customers are charged the correct amount, whether ordering online, dining in, or picking up.

💡 If you're unsure about the correct tax rates to apply, check with your local tax authority before proceeding.

How to Add Taxes to a Location

Follow these steps to configure taxes for any of your bakery locations:

  1. Go to the Settings menu
  2. Click Locations
  3. Select the store you want to edit
  4. Open the Taxes tab in the Location Details Menu
  5. Enter the Tax Name (e.g., “Sales Tax,” “Dine-In Tax,” or “Non-Bakery Tax”)
  6. Enter the Tax Rate as a percentage (e.g., 7.5%)
  7. To add another tax rate:
  8. Click Add Tax again
  9. Input the new name and rate
  10. Click Save

You can assign multiple tax rates to a single location if needed. For example, you may need different rates for:

  • Packaged goods
  • Dine-in orders
  • Beverages or retail merchandise

How BakeSmart Applies Taxes

Tax rules are based on a combination of three factors:

  • Location (each store can have its own rates)
  • Assigned Tax Rate (entered manually per store)
  • Order Type (To-Go is the system default, Dine-In must be specified)

💡 Example: A cookie purchased as part of a Dine-In order may be taxed differently than one picked up to go. Merchandise, like mugs or shirts, may have another rate entirely.

Tips for Naming and Clarity

💡 Use clear, descriptive tax names so your staff and customers can easily identify charges on receipts.

Examples:

  • “To-Go Tax”
  • “Retail Sales Tax”
  • “Beverage Tax”

Advanced Tax Rules

You’ll have the ability to override location-level tax defaults on a per-product basis during item setup. This gives you additional control over tax application across your product catalog and will be covered further in the product configuration phase of onboarding.
