Understanding Gift Cards in BakeSmart
Overview
Gift Cards in BakeSmart allow bakeries to sell prepaid value that customers can redeem in-store or online. Gift cards support upfront revenue and repeat business without ongoing monthly fees.
This article explains what gift cards are, what is supported today, and how gift cards are tracked in BakeSmart. Step-by-step instructions for selling and redeeming gift cards are covered in separate How To articles.
What Are Gift Cards in BakeSmart?
A BakeSmart gift card is a stored-value payment method that:
- Is loaded with a dollar amount
- Can be reloaded with additional value
- Can be redeemed across multiple orders
- Retains its balance until fully used
Gift cards are tracked separately from standard payments, allowing bakeries to clearly monitor outstanding balances and usage over time.
Availability & Fees
Availability
Gift cards can be:
- Sold in-store through POS
- Reloaded at the POS
- Redeemed at:
- POS checkout
- Online checkout
Online gift card purchases through eCommerce are not currently available. (Coming in 2026)
Fees
- No monthly gift card fees
- 3% processing fee on the initial load only
- No fees for:
- Gift card redemption
- Reloading existing gift cards
- Balance tracking or reporting
Core Gift Card Capabilities
BakeSmart supports the following gift card functionality:
- Sell physical and digital gift cards in-store
- Reload existing gift cards with additional value
- Redeem gift cards at POS or online checkout
- Track balances and transaction history
Gift cards may be partially redeemed and reused until the balance reaches zero.
Tracking & Reporting
Gift card activity is tracked directly in BakeSmart, including:
- Balance history
- Reload and redemption records
- Order-linked transaction logs
BakeSmart also includes a Gift Card Liabilities Report, which shows:
- Outstanding gift card balances
- Total unredeemed value (deferred revenue)
This report helps bakery owners understand open gift card balances at any point in time.
Importing Existing Gift Cards
BakeSmart supports importing gift cards from a previous provider.
To import existing gift cards, the following information is required:
- Gift card number
- Current balance
This ensures customers retain their remaining value during the transition to BakeSmart.
Gift Card Hardware & Vendors
BakeSmart supports:
- Magnetic stripe card swipers for legacy gift cards
- Physical gift cards from supported vendors
